Early Career Beginnings
The early years of Dale were just the beginnings of a stellar career.
In 1975, he ran his 1st NASCAR race finishing 22nd while driving Ed Negre's Dodge in the World 600 at
Charlotte.
In 1979, Rod Osterlund offered Dale his first full-time Winston Cup ride for the 1979 season. He considered the offer the biggest break of his career and later that year Dale won his 1st NASCAR Winston Cup race during his 16th run at the Southeastern 500 in Bristol Tennessee. At the end of the year he was named NASCAR Rookie of The Year.
In 1980, he won his first NASCAR Winston Cup Championship beating Cale Yarborough and becoming the first driver to win Rookie of The Year and the NASCAR Winston Cup Championship in successive seasons.
In 1980, he won his 1st Bush Clash.
In 1986, he won his 2nd Winston Cup Championship.
In 1987, he won his 3rd Winston Cup Championship.
